On Saturday night, as the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat got together to kick off an opening round playoff series that promised drama and excitement, tempers quickly flared bringing back memories of last year’s opening round series against Chicago. The following occurred and resulted in a one-game suspension for Kevin Garnett.
I, for one, will disagree with this call until my final breath. KG was standing over, checking on a fallen teammate, when Quentin “I Can’t Hold Down a Team Because I am a Cancer” Richardson decided to butt his face in on the guy he had just knocked over and took offense to KG putting up his arm to hold back the enemy.
The more I watch this video, the more I disagree with the league as well. Garnett didn’t cause the melee and he was held back so early in it that he was nearly unable to participate. Garnett’s “vicious elbow” to the head of Richardson was clearly a result of him trying to pull away from being held back from helping his Captain regain his feet on the floor. In fact, when watching the video, there is a clear argument for Jermaine O’Neal, who clearly threw Big Baby to the ground, to be suspended and fined as well.
There is a lot to be said about this suspension, especially as the Celtics enjoyed a fourth quarter in game one where they held the Heat to a staggering 10 points vs. their own 21 to come back from being down at the end of the each the first, second, and third quarters.
Can Big Baby and Old Man Rasheed help Kendrick Perkins get the job done in spite of the absence of Garnett? Based on the opponent, I would have to say yes.
Despite the “malicious” Garnett being outside of the arena, Miami (and the rest of the league for that matter.. ahem, Joakim Noah) had certainly be careful with what they say and who they want to start feuds with. A guy like KG is just the type to allow such nay-say to light the spark and power them to the end.
But we will take it. And David Stern can’t hold down the Boston Celtics.
