The Barbershop – 4SB Links 1/12

Many of you probably remember the old school barbershop. Not too many of them left though. You had to get there for 6 – 7 a.m. on a Saturday just to not sit for three hours but sometimes, just sitting there was well worth it.

This was a place that you could go every week for all the latest in local sports talk. The barber himself was a former star football player on the local high school team. All of the guys, from toddlers out with their dad on a Saturday morning to old men getting their cup of joe and trying to get out of the house,  lined up in the cushy seats along the wall waiting and “talking shop” about sports. Some of these guys even came in just to talk sports and everyone probably felt it was worth the five dollar haircut just to get in the door.

There was the occasional hilarious event when a Yankee fan sat down in the chair and gave the barber a hard time about the Red Sox recent woes (yes, this was pre-2004) and I vividly remember one day watching the barber shave a Red Sox “B” into the back of a Yankee fan police officer’s head… while he was on duty! As the officer stepped out and closed the door behind him, the crowd in the 20′ x 10′ room erupted in laughter and the barber simply stated “He’s gonna pissed when he finds that!”.

Occasionally, one of the local star athletes would step in for a cut and he was instantly turned into the room’s version of Tom Brady, Kevin Garnett, Marc Savard, or Kevin Youkilis. Instant fame. “Don’t even take out your wallet kid, that hit you put on (insert opposing team joker here) was phenomenal.”

So this links page will become that exact platform here on 4SportBoston. Updated several times a week, this is just a place that we can post some of our favorite local blogs’ best posts for the week. A place you can come for a glance at what is going on around Boston in one screen shot.

So enjoy, and while you are here, you are the local hero athlete… keep your wallet in your pocket.
